Stained Glass is becoming more popular and accessible to beginner artists. With technological advances in tools and equipment, students can learn the art form more easily.
Stained glass is one of the more rewarding mediums to work with because you can watch your piece come to life as you learn more effective techniques and master the different methods.
Maine is a great state to live in (or visit) if you are interested in stained glass. The state is home to many glass studios – most of which offer classes for students of any level.
There are workshops, private classes, group classes and even one-day sessions available in the state, so no matter your schedule you can find a studio that works for you.
The studios below are great places to begin and as you grow and learn the art you can move into more advanced classes!

1) Maine Art Glass

Maine Art Glass (MAG) offers stained glass classes for artists of all levels. They teach a mix of techniques to develop a pool of creativity for their students. All of their regular classes are taught in an “open workshop” style and beginner students start with a small suncatcher that takes 1-2 classes to complete. Once this is completed, students can move on to anything they’d like!
Those that choose to continue have the opportunity to explore many different mediums such as fusing, painting and enameling, and mosaic methods.
MAG offer 8 consecutive weekly classes or 8 classes over a 4-month period – this is an excellent choice for students with busy schedules.
Students receive access to MAG’s patterns and library, free access to their scrap glass and use of studio tools free of charge! On top of all this, students also receive a 10% discount on all purchases of materials, tools and books for life.

Stained Glass Express is a family-owned business that was established in July of 1988. The studio has provided glass, supplies and inspiration to the art world ever since!
Their retail store sells stained glass supplies from all major manufacturers. They offer a wide variety of classes and most classes are available during the day or evening to best accommodate students’ schedules.
The beginner class is 5 weeks long and has a maximum of eight people. This class requires no experience. Students will learn the proper steps to making a stained glass piece in the Tiffany Style (or copper foil) method.
The first class in this course teaches students to cut glass and construct a simple bird; after this is completed, students can use the rest of the time creating their own project with instruction when needed. Students also receive a store discount for the length of time that they are in the class.
3) Treehouse Glass Studio

The Treehouse Glass Studio specializes in traditional and whimsical stained glass designs and carries a full line of stained glass supplies. Their classes are great for all students 12 years or older.
They offer private or group lessons where students can choose patterns from the studio’s design books. You can use your own design if you don’t find a design you like.
Students will learn stained glass techniques that will widen their horizons. These techniques include but are not limited to glass cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering and cleaning.

Sundancer Stained Glass is a full-service studio that offers a variety of classes and workshops on several topics. Right now, Deb (the owner) is offering a “Helpers Workshop” that is available for established hobbyists who already understand the fabrication of stained glass.
This workshop is by appointment only and is an opportunity for students to find help on what steps they should take next or how to navigate a difficult pattern. Unfortunately, due to COVID, this is not an open studio workshop.
Deb is making it available for students who are navigating the complexities of a design they are already working on.

Glass Mermaid Studio, owned by Lisa Blanchard, is a place to further your passion for creativity, curiosity and connections. The teaching sector of the studio was founded to provide students with an “excellent and rewarding learning experience in an inspirational setting.” Their team members will help students learn techniques while having fun.
Glass Mermaid Studio’s stained glass course is 3 sessions long and students will design and create a small stained glass panel that features their favorite found objects – this could be sea glass, shells, pottery, etc. You can either bring your own stained glass and found objects or purchase them from the studio; all other materials are provided!
Students will learn how to cut glass, solder and finish their pieces.

Beveled Edge’s classes are designed to offer personalized attention to each student. The studio has an established reputation for comprehensive teaching for students of all levels and offers a relaxed atmosphere.
The studio offers classes with hands-on assistance, whether that is in a private class or group session. New students can begin classes at any time, and unlike other studios where beginners start all at once, this class helps to avoid the frustration of waiting for instruction by allowing students to begin at various times. This also allows for current students to help new people as well!
The beginner course is 6 weeks long, but if students have a desire to take it further, the studio offers continuing classes for $25/class (about 2.5 hours). In the beginner class, students are provided with quality tools and sundries; however, a savings of $50.00 is available if students choose to purchase the tools separately.
