List of Stained Glass Classes in Indiana
Indiana has an exceptional history when it comes to glass and glass art. The Trenton Gas Field (discovered in 1887) welcomed an age of booming industry for the state, including the glass industry.
By 1900, building and fueling gas-fired furnaces became so efficient that glass companies quickly spread across the state.
The art glass community flourished as gas wells became more and more popular. Charles Edward Henry, a glass chemist, immigrated to the US from France and had a small art glass studio in New York. He sold novelty items and met many glass artists in the New York area – including the inventor of the copper foil method of stained glass, Louis Tiffany. Henry knew the business was beginning to grow.
On April 27, 1888, Henry met with local officials to build a glass plant in Kokomo. Within a day’s time, Henry came to an agreement with the officials and he was provided with a plant site and natural gas supply.
The Indiana Glass Trail is dedicated to teaching the public about the glass art history described above. The Glass Trail is a showcase for Hoosier artisans. The Trail connects six counties in east-central Indiana: Hamilton, Jay, Howard, Kosciusko, Delaware and Madison. 1) Bliss Glass

Bliss Glass is a glass art and memorial art studio that is run by Lynee Walters. She offers several different options for stained glass classes.
For all of Walters’ classes, it is recommended to bring lunch/snacks with you and dress comfortably; close-toed shoes are required.
The crash course is a 5-hour class that requires no previous experience. Students work on a suncatcher to take home. She also offers private lessons for students who are looking for one-on-one instruction. The lesson is offered over two consecutive days and participants build stained glass panels.
Bliss Glass’s intermediate class is 9-10 hours and is open to 2-4 students. The class has a prerequisite of prior experience with stained glass. Walters says the studio is willing to work with prospective students to create class schedules that work for them.
2) The Cracked Glass

The Cracked Glass has been Dyer’s source for stained glass since 1993. The studio offers classes Tuesday through Saturday, and sells the glass, supplies, and tools that students need to build their own stained glass piece.
Cracked Glass’s stained glass classes are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening. They offer ongoing enrollment so students can begin at any time.
The beginner level class is six weeks long, with class meetings once a week for three hours. The Level 1 students are able to use all of the studio’s tools and equipment but they are required to purchase their own glass.
The Cracked Glass offers personalized instruction and teach the fundamentals of the Tiffany copper foil method of stained glass.
3) Classic Stained Glass Shop

The Classic Stained Glass Shop is a family-owned and operated business. They are a full-service stained glass store, so they carry all of the tools, glass and supplies that an artist may need to build a piece of stained glass. The studio has nearly 500 pattern books in stock!
Classic Stained Glass classes are available for all levels of experience. The beginning stained glass class is six weeks long and meets one day per week for 2.5 hours. Students do not need any prior experience and will learn the copper foil method.
The intermediate class lasts for three weeks and meets one day per week for 2.5 hours. This class requires students to have taken Classic Stained Glass Shop’s beginning stained glass course.
The studio also offers a lead stained glass class that is four weeks long, meets one day per week for 2.5 hours, and teaches the leading method (the traditional way of assembling stained glass).

The Last Unicorn is owned by Ekaterina Reier, a Russian immigrant who came to the US in search of the American Dream (she found it!). Her studio offers fabulous private classes for individuals.
Students do not need any experience before beginning the class. Reier’s schedule is flexible and varies depending on each student. Night and weekend classes are available to ensure no student misses out. If you prefer to go with a friend, you pay per piece rather than by time (for two people it is $250/piece).
Reier works with each student to ensure they get as much or as little guidance as they want. You’ll complete either one or two projects, depending on your experience level and students are able to use scrap glass provided by the studio if they so choose. Reier also offers a basic stained glass painting class for anyone interested!
5) Bloomington Creative Glass Center

The Bloomington Creative Glass Center (BCGC) is a non-profit organization that has committed itself to bringing affordable, high-quality education about glass art to everyone in southern Indiana!
Classes are available to anyone who has an interest in glass art and are great ways to begin your stained glass journey. BCGC’s beginning stained glass class covers the copper foil technique and lasts four weeks. Students learn the basics of pattern design, glass cutting, foiling and more.
The intermediate course also focuses on the copper foil technique but goes deeper into the method. The class covers basic 3D designs, boxes and troubleshooting. For this class, students are expected to come in outside of class time in order to finish their projects.

Robin’s Stained Glass Studio is owned and operated by Robin Mohr. She has been teaching, designing and creating stained glass art for over 30 years.
Mohr offers adult and youth classes, so anyone can find a class. The adult classes help students learn the skills they need to handle the basic materials for stained glass, from cutting glass to designing and completing projects. These classes teach everything from traditional techniques to hot glass techniques.
The youth classes are offered to students in elementary, middle school, and high school. Mohr is able to teach the younger generations everything they need to know to learn this versatile art. Mohr also offers field trips.
7) Chesterton Art Center

The Chesterton Art Center is a non-profit arts organization that is dedicated to “enriching the cultural landscape of Northwest Indiana.” They believe art is for everyone, so they offer a huge variety of classes.
The Center’s adult classes and workshops allow students to refine their studio skills, build the foundations, or even start a new medium!
The beginning stained glass class is eight weeks long and students will learn the copper foil method of stained glass; tools and supplies are provided for this course. Do note that this class is a prerequisite to the Stained Glass Open Studio option.
Chesterton Art Center’s youth classes offer stimulating, creative and supportive classes for students at any age (preschool to high school).
