North Dakota is a state in the Upper Midwest and Great Plains regions. The state was part of the Dakota Territory in the 1800s and was a popular place for pioneer settlement.
New towns in the Dakota Territory required local blacksmiths for everyday products and repairs. Blacksmithing was one of the most important occupations on the frontier.
Because of its pioneer history, North Dakota has a strong blacksmithing culture. There are a few great places to learn blacksmithing in the state.

Lund Blacksmithing is owned and operated by Kerwin Lund. He has over 30 years of blacksmithing and teaching experience and is passionate about sharing his craft with others.
Those interested in Lund’s blacksmithing work can see him in action at demonstrations, hammer ins, craft shows, and conferences throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. Depending on the event, participants can watch Lund work and even take a class with him.

Lesja Forge is a new business that opened in 2020. Owner Levi Joraanstad is a 27 year old who runs the Forge from Fargo but also travels to teach classes. He makes everything from swords and knives to hardware for the home.
Classes with Joraanstad are perfect for beginner, intermediate, and advanced smiths alike. Examples of projects include candlesticks, hooks, and holiday decor.

Fort Union Trading Post operated as one of the top fur trading posts on the Upper Missouri River in the 19th century. Today, the Fort operates as a historical site and learning center.
The Fort’s resident blacksmiths offer classes occasionally. These classes are free and suitable for all levels. They are especially helpful for those completely new to the forge.
Both children and adults can participate in Fort Union Trading Post’s blacksmithing classes. Youth under a certain age must be accompanied by an adult.
