Blacksmithing remained a vital profession as Georgia’s economy saw massive changes in the 19th century with the Civil War and Reconstruction era in the aftermath of the war.

Goat n Hammer has been offering metalworking classes in Atlanta since 2013. 

There are a range of blacksmithing, bladesmithing, and knife grinding classes available, so if you are looking for variety, this location might be a great fit for you. Classes are formatted by project made, and include bottle openers, various types of knives, campfire tripods, and more.

Corrina Sephora is a mixed media artist offering classes in Atlanta. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2005 and since then has completed several residencies to continue her education. Sephora’s work has won several awards and is featured in museums and historical sites around Georgia. 

Her classes include beginner welding and forging. She teaches the basic skills and techniques needed to create a phone holder or fire poker. 

Sephora’s classes are held in the evenings for around 2 hours, which means even the busiest enthusiasts can take a class! If you want to learn forging or welding in a short amount of time for an affordable price, Corrina Sephora’s classes would be great for you.

Casey & Son Horseshoeing School teaches blacksmithing specific to the role of a farrier and the techniques needed to fit and shoe horses. This option is obviously unique and highly specialized, but is one of the best schools in the nation for horseshoeing. 

The school offers instruction in blacksmithing, corrective shoeing and more and all classes are taught on live horses. If becoming a farrier is something you have been considering, this location is a great option!

Greenhow Handmade is owned by full-time blacksmith Patrick Blount. He has been smithing for over a decade and offers classes at his new workshop in Washington, GA. The workshop, originally built in 1892, is being renovated by Blount and restored to its original purpose as a blacksmith shop. 

If you are interested in learning smithing in a historical setting, Greenhow Handmade is the place to go. Classes teach basic skills that will help new smiths build a foundation in blacksmithing. All necessary tools and materials are provided. Students create a beginner project during the full day class. 

5) Hammered Heart Forge

Hammered Heart Forge opened in 2010 and is owned and operated by Michael J. Sebacher. He creates custom pieces and teaches classes on his 50 acre horse ranch. Sebacher has over 2 decades of blacksmithing experience and is the founder and director of the Artisans Heritage Guild of Newnan-Coweta, GA. 

Sebacher offers 3 classes for beginner and intermediate students. His Railroad Spike Knife class teaches participants how manipulate metal using basic skills. The Ladies Metal Art Cuff workshop teaches women how to forge their own iron and leather cuff bracelets.

6) The Forge at Art Center West

The Roswell, GA Parks and Recreation department offers the community affordable blacksmithing and bladesmithing classes at The Forge at Art Center West. The Forge’s classes are ideal for blacksmiths of all ages who want to connect with other smiths and learn new skills. 

The Forge is currently offering several bladesmithing classes. Choose to make a railroad spike knife, Bowie knife, hunting knife, or tomahawk. Students learn the designing, hammering, grinding, and hardening techniques required for creating functional blades. 

Depending on the project you choose, you will also learn how to make handles for your blades. 

Intermediate and advanced blacksmiths should check out The Forge’s Open Anvil nights. Friday evening sessions are currently scheduled for the spring and summer. Fuel and tools are included and students bring their own metal and project ideas. 

This is a great option for those who do not have a home setup or who want to complete a project started in another class. 

7) Ocmulgee Blacksmith Guild

Ocmulgee Blacksmith Guild is a non profit ABANA affiliate organization for smiths of all ages and experience levels. The Guild meets monthly and also hosts demonstrations, auctions, and more. 

Each meeting includes a demonstration and a themed project. Examples of upcoming projects include handles, cooking utensils, hooks, brackets, cloak pins, letter openers, dinner bells, and ornaments. 

Entire families can get involved in Ocmulgee Blacksmith Guild’s Blacksmithing 101 course for youth. Children ages 12-17 learn about safety, tools, and basic forging and create a simple hook. Parents are required to accompany their child. This is a great way to share your love for blacksmithing with your child!
