Stained glass is a beautiful medium to work with that has a rich history throughout the world.
Learning the craft takes hours of work, but is one of the more rewarding types of art because of its complexity. Making and watching a stained glass panel, suncatcher, or window evolve into a colorful work of art is a fulfilling way to pass the time!
Michigan is a great place to grow in the medium and learn to harness the skills behind the copper foil and lead came methods.
Michigan has several great glass art studios that are excellent places to begin your stained glass journey. Experienced instructors at each studio are there to help and guide you as you learn to cut glass, grind, solder and finish your stained glass pattern.
The studios below are able to help beginner students as well as those with projects already under their belt.

1) Canterbury Stained Glass

Canterbury Stained Glass offers classes for those who are either in need of a refresher or are just starting out. Right now, the studio is only open by appointment, but their classes are well worth it.
The classes and workshops are designed to give you the skills you need to build stained glass windows or panels using the copper foil method. Students learn how to select glass, prepare patterns, cut and grind glass, foil, solder, and use patinas.
Students must purchase their own tools because there is work to complete at home.
Do keep in mind that registering in advance is required because the class size is limited.

Merry Go Round Stained Glass, or MGR, teaches stained glass classes that are meant to be a comprehensive and well-rounded introduction to the copper foil method. The instructors present students with a variety of cutting styles, and encourage students to find their personal style!
Students in the beginners’ course receive twelve hours over a five week period.
The studio does not provide all the tools that students will need; students must buy a glass cutter, glass pliers, basic supplies, and glass to complete their project. MGR will supply the patterns for this course.
The intermediate and advanced classes can include a variety of projects, but the size may be limited. The studio encourages prospective students to call for current information on availability and times.

Thompson Art Glass teaches both traditional and new methods from 3rd and 4th generation stained glass artists. Over six weeks, students learn the techniques of glass cutting, pattern making, fabrication, soldering, and finishing steps.
This studio teaches the copper foil and the lead came methods and students will complete two projects over the course.
The maximum class size is six people so that students can receive personalized instruction. Projects at this studio range in size from about two to three square feet.

Rainbow Resources Art Glass teaches traditional stained glass classes for all skill levels. These classes are on Wednesday evenings, but many of the classes are full a month or more before the class begins – so make sure to call or visit to secure your spot!
Students can select from the studio’s designs or make their own. All projects must be approved by an instructor to ensure it is appropriate to a students’ experience levels.
The project size is limited due to time restrictions, but students will still learn the foundational techniques.
Student-required tools and materials are not included in the class price, so be prepared to spend between $50-100. And if you can’t make it to one of the Wednesday sessions, don’t fret! Make up classes are available on Saturdays.

B.L.V Stained Glass is owned by Lorrie and Bruce, who have been repairing and building stained glass art for over 40 years. The duo offers classes on Monday afternoons and evenings for four to six weeks.
The time frame depends on the student and they receive the instruction they need to understand the art. All tools and materials are supplied and the student gets to choose a project of their choice.

Stained Glass By Laura is a studio owned by Laura Hamlett; she has a B.S. in Education and took a stained glass master class, after which she decided to offer stained glass classes herself. She has been teaching for over 25 years, so you are sure to get the most of your classes here.
All the tools and materials are included, but students are encouraged to bring their own safety goggles. Hamlett offers beginner classes where students can choose to create a suncatcher, holiday ornament, and much more. You can even choose to make your own design.

Creatively! Glass offers classes for those who have no experience working with glass. The studio provides all of the supplies and tools, and students receive a 10% discount on any additional supplies purchased during the course.
Each class has a maximum of four students and lasts for two hours and continues for three weeks. Some work may be done at home, but because the beginners class project is on the smaller side, it may not be necessary.
Students can choose from the following patterns: a patchwork heart, abstract circle, butterfly, square horizon, or a seasonal suncatcher.
Creatively! Glass also offer a class for those who know the basics but still need additional help with techniques, and the tools are still provided although students do need to purchase their own glass.

Stallings Stained Glass offers a beginner course that teaches students the foundations of cutting, grinding, foiling, and soldering a stained glass project.
Students will make a Victorian Suncatcher with the materials provided by the studio. The classes are six hours long and students must be 16 years old or older to participate.
Be aware that no make-up classes are available if you miss one, and you can only change the date of your class one time with a week’s notice.
