List of Stained Glass Classes in Massachusetts

Evidence of the practice of stained glass dates back to the Ancient Roman Empire when craftsmen used colored glass to produce decorative wares.

The famous Lycurgus Cup indicates that the art emerged as early as the 4th century. By the 7th century, glassmakers shifted from decorative wares to windows.  The earliest example known of this “new” practice can be seen in St. Paul’s Monastery in Jarrow, England.

The art of stained glass uses pieces of glass that have been colored by metallic oxides during the manufacturing process. Depending on what oxides are added, you can have a range of different hues. As an example, if you add copper oxides to molten glass, it will result in green and blue tones.           

These glass pieces are then cut, ground, foiled, and soldered to make the beautiful stained glass pieces we see nowadays. You may think it takes a true professional artist to accomplish such artworks, but in reality, even those with no experience can make a stained glass panel that is beautiful and unique.

The Glass Bar’s stained glass classes are run by Tracey Adams, a self-proclaimed “life-long learner” with more than 30 years of experience. Adams is continuously learning new glass techniques to best teach her courses.

The Glass Bar offers a 6-part workshop and two individual 3-hour classes. Students will learn glass cutting, copper foiling, soldering, framing and more! Tools and materials are sold separately, so be sure to go prepared.

2) Dragonfly Stained Glass Studio

Dragonfly Stained Glass Studio welcomes students of all levels into their classes. The studio began offering annual memberships in July of 2022; members have access to the studio 24/7 and are allowed to use the tools there.

Members also receive their own key to the studio and a 10% discount on any class.

If you are looking for less of a commitment, the studio offers a class where students can make a suncatcher, 3-D spinner, a small panel, or a few ornaments. The class covers all of the skills and techniques students need to build a piece that is unique and fun.

Tools and materials are included in the tuition. Dragonfly Stained Glass also offers classes for more advanced students.

3) Diablo Glass School

Diablo Glass School is a public access glass art studio with an inviting atmosphere. In the stained glass class, students learn the copper foil method by working their way through making a suncatcher.

Students will learn how to cut, grind and solder glass with necessary guidance. The studio can provide patterns or students can bring their own designs – the studio encourages students to bring images for inspiration.

Shards Stained and Etched Glass Studio has been designing, making, building, repairing and teaching since 1985.

It offers a beginner copper foil seminar that introduces students to stained art’s basic skills and tools. Students will learn traditional and contemporary glass techniques and will make one piece from start to finish over six hours. The price covers all glass, tools and materials.

The studio’s classes are determined by demand, so if you would like to take a class that isn’t offered, they encourage you to put in a request. They also offer private seminars.

5) Toy Town Stained Glass

Toy Town Stained Glass offers stained glass sessions for beginners. The length of the class depends on the student; however, each session runs for 2.5 hours. All supplies and tools are supplied, excluding glass.

This class is designed to teach students the skills they need to do stained glass art at home or continue using the studio for other projects.

Students will choose a pattern, and learn how to cut, grind, foil, solder and frame their piece. Each pattern is different, so students can work at their own pace and receive the proper instruction they need.

Neil Orange Peel Stained Glass is owned by Neil, who has been a stained glass artist for over 25 years and has taught over 250 students to date! Some of his students have even gone on to start their own businesses within the glass art field.

In his classes, students make their own stained glass pieces where they choose their pattern and colors, make their design, and then learn to cut, grind, solder and frame the piece. All of the tools and equipment are provided.

Glass Visions Stained Glass offers monthly stained glass classes and is a full-service stained glass studio. Most of their classes have a 2-4 student maximum to ensure their students receive the attention they need.

The advanced class runs with single students if necessary. The dates and times for all classes can be modified, so if you do not see a time that works with your schedule, be sure to contact the studio!

Students will learn how to cut, grind, foil and solder their pieces. If you decide to move forward with the art form, students who continue onto the Beginning Stained Glass class receive a $5 discount.
