New York is one of the best places to learn welding in the United States. The state’s network of community colleges and continuing education programs allows students from all walks of life to experience welding.
Most community college welding programs in New York are partnered with the state’s two college systems. State University of New York, or SUNY, schools serve those living across New York. These schools are located outside of the New York City metropolitan area.
Students living in New York City can attend schools within the City University of New York system. CUNY schools serve thousands of students of all ages living and and working in the city.
If one to four-year college programs aren’t your preference, there are also several smaller class options that require less commitment. These classes have their own benefits and should be considered alongside SUNY and CUNY programs.

Corning Community College is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The college opened in 1958 and includes a state-of-the-art welding facility that opened in 2015.
Individual welding classes and a Career Welding program are offered at Corning Community College. The individual classes cover topics like TIG and MIG welding, as well as blueprint reading.

Westchester Community College offers the value of a SUNY education for a more affordable price. The school serves over 20,000 students and is a well-established institution.
The college has an online welder technician program as part of its continuing education services. Classes include math, manufacturing, robotics, rigging, inspection, cutting processes, SMAW, and GMAW.

Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) has a proud history as New York’s first community college. The school offers a one-year welding certificate that prepares students for immediate employment after graduation.

Kingsborough Community College is located in Brooklyn and is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. All credits completed at the community college transfer seamlessly into four-year CUNY schools.
Traditional welding is not offered at Kingsborough, but students can instead earn an associate of applied science degree in maritime technology.
This Coast Guard-approved program introduces students to the various unique skills required for maintaining boats and ships. The degree is paired with several certificates that focus on a particular skillset.
For example, the maritime technology degree with a mechanic’s certificate allows students to specialize in repairs. Basic and advanced welding classes are part of this particular curriculum.

Makerspace NYC is a non-profit studio that opened in 2013. As the name suggests, the facility is a makerspace that provides its community with the space and tools required to construct, weld, and experiment.
Basic and advanced welding classes are offered at the facility for $60-$75 per hour. Most classes run for 2 or 3 hours.
Skills taught include setting up machinery, basic safety, SMAW, GTAW, and oxy-acetylene welding.
