The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, or South Dakota Mines, is a science and engineering university that has been serving students since 1885.
The School is located nearby Mount Rushmore and other popular destinations in Rapid City. Students in the department of Materials & Metallurgical Engineering can participate in a few educational blacksmithing opportunities.
The department is home to the Back in Black Blacksmithing Club and is affiliated with major organizations in blacksmithing, welding, and similar fields.
South Dakota Mines’ Materials & Metallurgical Engineering department also offers a youth summer camp for grades 8-12. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about blacksmithing, heat treating, welding, and casting.
Students who participate in the summer camp will learn about the processes and will gain insight into working in materials and metal occupations.

Dunn’s Forge is a veteran owned and operated blacksmithing and bladesmithing shop that offers custom blades and beginner classes.
Classes at Dunn’s Forge run on the weekends and last several days. Students make their own small tactical knives. Skills taught include shaping, grinding, sharpening, heat treating, and more.
