The state of Missouri has both bustling cities and rural areas that are the perfect settings for learning blacksmithing.
With established shops and organizations in St. Louis and other areas, you are sure to find an opportunity to learn blacksmithing. The southern Midwestern region is known for its rich history of blacksmithing and bladesmithing. The neighboring state of Arkansas boasts the first Bowie knife.
Missouri shares a similar tradition of metalsmithing. The state’s diverse economy also supports metal crafting and manufacturing.

1) Hammerspace Community Workshop

Hammerspace Community Workshop is located in Kansas City, right on the border of Missouri and Kansas. It is run by proprietor Dave Dalton and his creative team of craftspeople. The space is a membership organization that is “like a gym for people who build stuff.”
Several tiers of membership are available, and Hammerspace members gain access to workspaces and tools. Blacksmiths and bladesmiths can enjoy Hammerspace’s large work areas and wide range of equipment.
In addition to providing workspace for creators, Hammerspace also offers a wide range of classes and workshops geared towards beginner through advanced students.
Blacksmithing and knife making classes are project focused. Students can choose to create roses, camp cutlery, Viking forks, hunting knives, spike knives, Damascus knives, and jewelry.

The Missouri School of Blacksmithing is one of the top places in Missouri to learn smithing. Since its establishment in 2016, the School has taught hundreds of students in its high-quality classes.
The School is owned and operated by Matthew Burnett, who has been a member of the Blacksmith Association of Missouri since 2003. His classes are appropriate for beginner, intermediate, and advanced smiths.
Those who are brand new to blacksmithing should take Burnett’s introductory class. This class covers all the basics of smithing like bending, cutting, upsetting, punching, and drawing. Students complete J hooks, S hooks, shovels, and rakes in this beginner option.
Fathers and sons should consider taking a Father’s Day themed class at the Missouri School of Blacksmithing. This class runs for 3 days and fathers and sons work together to complete a project.
In addition to these classes, students can also choose to create cooking utensils, tongs, and tools.
4) Ozark Blacksmithing @ Lake of the Ozarks Scout Reservation

Ozark Blacksmithing is a workshop located at the Lake of the Ozarks Scout Reservation. This picturesque setting is the perfect place to learn the traditional craft of smithing.
Ozark Blacksmithing started in 2019 and offers blacksmithing and knife making classes for children and adults. The workshop features 12 anvils, 4 forges, 5 welders, a plasma cutter, grinders, and many hand tools.
Classes cover forging, shaping, hardening, tempering, grinding, and other project-specific skills. The introductory blacksmithing class teaches students how to make an S hook or fire poker. Small knives are the focus of the knife making class.
5) Blacksmith Association of Missouri (BAM)

The Blacksmith Association of Missouri, or BAM, was founded in 1983 and has promoted blacksmithing in Missouri ever since. This well-established organization is an ABANA member and welcomes smiths from all walks of life.
BAM members participate in bi-monthly meetings at different members’ workshops across Missouri. The meetings include demonstrations, workshops, and open forge time.
Annual conferences, books, and newsletters are other resources available to BAM members for the affordable membership fee of only $30.

Blacksmithing classes and workshops are now offered at Craft Alliance. Taught by me, Kim Stahl, the first female on Forged in Fire (S. 2 E. 1, Warhammer) and proud member of Gateway Area Knife Club (GAKC), Blacksmiths Association of Missouri (BAM) and Arch Reactor Hackerspace/Makerspace (which also has a natural gas forge and anvil). Introduction to Blacksmithing is a 6-week course teaching the basics and allows students time to explore what they have learned. Workshops are one day, typically 3 hours, and with a strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions, students leave with a finished project.
