New York has a long history of glass blowing, and is one of the top states in the US to learn glass blowing for yourself.
As a Dutch colony and one of the original thirteen colonies of America, the state of New York has a long and rich history. The first settlers of present day New York arrived in the 1600s and many of them were glass artisans.
In the 1600s, New York City was the Dutch city of New Amsterdam. Glass production was important to the settlement, so much so that New Amsterdam had a street called Glass Makers Street.
New Amsterdam became the most successful location of ongoing glass production in North America through the 17th century.
Glass production continues to play a major role in the culture of New York today. The state is home to the world’s largest glass museum: The Corning Museum of Glass. The city of Corning, NY is called “Crystal City” because of the Museum and other glass blowing studios in the area.

The Corning Museum of Glass was founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works and is the world’s most comprehensive museum of glass.
The Museum is a nonprofit organization home to a huge collection of glass artifacts, classes, and more. Experience over 50,000 glass objects in the museum and get inspired to learn the artform for yourself.
With over half a million visitors per year, The Corning Museum of Glass is the most popular place to observe glass from thousands of years ago to today.
Classes are offered at the Museum during fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters. Winter and summer classes are considered intensives and have a different application process than fall and spring offerings.
All classes are categorized into multiple skill levels, from all-levels to advanced. Intensive courses run for one week and include flameworking, cold working, sandblasting, fusing, and color application methods.
Upcoming spring courses include beginner glass blowing, beadmaking, and project-based classes on paperweights, pendants, and cups. These course options meet for 10 weeks.

Hands-on Glass Hot Glass Studio opened in 1990 and is owned and operated by Rodi Rovner. It was the first public-access glass blowing studio in Corning, NY and continues to be a popular place to experience glass art.
Hands-on Glass offers blow-your-own ornament, pumpkin, and paperweight classes. Participants get to pick their own projects and colors and assist in the glass blowing process.
Classes are appropriate for people of all ages, making this a great family activity to plan when visiting Corning.

Classes are formatted in single day workshops and multiple week sessions for those seeking project-based learning or in-depth instruction.
Single day workshops are project-based and teach all the basics of glass blowing in a short amount of time. Students create beginner projects like paperweights and other simple shapes.
Serious students can sign up for beginner, intermediate, and advanced glass blowing and flameworking class sessions. These classes run for 8 weeks and cover a wider range of topics than single day workshops.
Beginners learn the fundamental techniques of glass blowing: gathering and shaping. Advanced courses dive into color, form, pulls, roll-ups, and other topics.

Expressive Glass offers studio rentals and glass art classes in Buffalo, NY. Classes are taught by Vicki Schneider, a glass artist with years of experience.
Schneider offers private and small group classes for people of all ages. Students learn flameworking or fusing to create beautiful finished objects.
Projects include tiles, paperweights, ornaments, beads, icicles, and pendants. Class sizes are small and classes run for a few hours, so you have plenty of time to complete your project the way you desire.
Learning flameworking is a great skill on its own, but it is also a fantastic introduction to other types of glassworking, such as glass blowing. The skills learned in Schneider’s classes can be beneficial when exploring other types of art.

Gregory Tomb Glassblowing Studio is owned and operated by Gregory Tomb. He fell in love with glass after visiting the Corning Museum of Glass as a child.
After studying art in college, Tomb took a class at UrbanGlass and has experience working in glass production with Simon Pearce.
Gregory Tomb shares his love for glass with students at his Arizona and New York studio locations. He teaches classes in the summer in New York, spending the rest of his time in Arizona.
Classes at Gregory Tomb Glassblowing Studio focus on the completion of specific projects like pumpkins, bowls, paperweights, snowmen, and vases.
Students get to pick their project and colors and assist Tomb in creating their work of art from start to finish.
